I grew up on a farm and it's very obvious when a cow goes on heat, she starts running round the field and mounts other cows then stands waiting for them to mount her. If she is not inseminated in time then she will come into heat a month later. The easiest solution is to keep a bull with the herd and replace him every two years. Bulls can be dangerous though. (I always think the artificial insemination man has an awful job) How stressed out are these poor cows that they don't exhibit this behaviour? Are they too tired to try and mate? Another sign we need to cut our milk consumption.
