Cancer comes in many forms. It's a group of biological diseases, an astrological sign and a lot more. Hitler referred to the Jews as cancer. Generally, it is used to describe something unwanted/negative which is spreading on its own and which is difficult to stop. Like a virus, except it's growing inside something that was once healthy, slowly destroying it. The Internet is the "host" in this context.
Although the Internet itself is technically and politically flawed in many ways, that's nothing compared to a disturbingly large percentage of its home users, which seems to increase all the time. I'm well aware of its history and things such as AOL and the "Eternal September", which came long before what I'm discussing here, but nothing has caused such a fundamental change for the worse as this phenomenon.
It cannot be stressed enough that I'm not saying that this is the sole, isolated cause of all the problems online. That would be retarded. However, it is definitely serious enough to write an article about since everyone else seems indifferent or blind to it. (Which, unfortunately, way too often is the case.)

Around 2004 or 2003, a mid-teen American anime freak whose name is unimportant saw the popular Japanese Web site "2channel", which was/is a crappy BBS where anyone could/can post anonymously as long as they spoke Japanese and had an IP address from Japan. I'm not 100% on the details here, but I believe it was using some kind of open source board, or maybe it just released its source. In either case, I know for sure that this kid took it, possibly translated it (although it was likely already translated by somebody with actual skills), and turned it into an English clone of 2channel, imaginatively called "4chan". (From this point on, I will refer to it as "Chancer".)
Overnight, he had "created" (well, copied and pasted) the worst English-language forum on the planet; a paradise of illegally distributed copyrighted drawn pictures of girls with cat ears and huge dicks, cyber terrorism and unfunny "memes". The many extreme usability and logic issues with this software pretty much guaranteed that the only ones who used it would be complete and utter morons of the worst kind. For instance, it required (and probably still does today) that you entered a secret code word into the "e-mail" field for it to actually take you back to the thread if you submitted a reply (or created a new thread). If you didn't, it would instead take you back to the index page where the threads with the most recent replies resided in a big ugly inline mess, meaning that if you replied and forgot to type in the magic code word, the thread was forever lost unless you had some extreme luck and was able to dig it up before it was gone forever, if posting happened to be "slow" at the time. Sounds insane? It is. And it's just one of many examples of what an absurd system this lucky idiot adopted.
Some people have told me that it "used to" be decent in the beginning, and that they themselves also refer to a "cancer" that came and ruined everything at some point. I don't buy this, based on the software itself and the personality of the person who ran it. And even if it were true, it is obvious that nothing was done about the problem once it became apparent.
My point couldn't be made any clearer: it was an incredibly crappy place, and its popularity can be attributed solely, or at least primarily, to one thing: it was (probably) the only English-language version of 2channel in existence, and since you didn't have to register/log in, the barriers for flooding it with junk posts were non-existent. And believe me: every thread I ever saw when I got linked to it was full of pure garbage. Trying to have any sensible discussion over there is just futile.

As mentioned, the inane design and non-existent moderation made it a very attractive "second home" for the absolutely lowest forms of life who spoke English and had access to the Internet. Let me just make it perfectly clear (if it isn't already) that I truly have absolutely no respect whatsoever for this smug asshole; he personifies everything that I despise about a human being and an administrator: he didn't create anything himself (just copied it), what he stole wasn't even good (except when hosted an illegal clone of my software under a subdomain and sent me mocking, psychotic e-mails whose replies he edited and published for his low-IQ minions to swallow as the truth), takes no responsibility whatsoever (which is a characteristic he shares with many others, unfortunately), abuses his power to harass and attack people who actually try to make the world better, yet gets constant "brownie points" among the brainwashed sheep who see him as some kind of God, and receives inexplicable media praise from moronic journalists while the obvious public reaction would be to literally hang him high for his own crimes as well as the many crimes he has actively chosen to allow/aid.

By the way, isn't it peculiar that the very same company which hosts their domain, Network Solutions, has consistently refused to do anything about their domain while immediately suspending my domain which had zero illegal material hosted on it? The only thing that matter is the number of people reporting something — nothing else matters in the least. This is cyber terrorism, plain and simple.

If you ignore the many "satellite sites" which revolve around Chancer and usually look identical except for different colors, and various "supporting" sites also made by the same kind of "people" (which is a very flattering term), perhaps the most serious issue is the fact that their obnoxious "memes" and unfunny in-"jokes" have spread so far outside of their own sphere of stupidity.
You can't just say to "not visit them", because naturally, I (or any sensible human being) would not do so, but we don't have to in order to be constantly reminded of their existence. They won't shut the fuck up or go away; they insist on dumbing down the entire Internet, as if it wouldn't be bad enough even without them. Everywhere you go, you see the endlessly repeated and endlessly moronic "memes" and stupid pictures being passed around. Even in many otherwise clean, nice and intelligent chat rooms, you often notice this nonsense daily. It's truly sad. It's a disease. It's cancer.
However it may seem, this isn't a rant against a specific person or site. I only focus on Chancer because it has been what has primarily enabled all of this crap to flourish and go on for so long, and it's grown exponentially. There are sites with much more concentrated cancer, but they are also much smaller.
I also consider Facebook and Google to be part of the cancer (or perhaps, more accurately, another kind) that is killing the Internet, in some ways even worse, but that would have to be explained in detail as it may not be as obvious, and will have to be saved for another article. (Roughly, they also have absolutely no control, allow both illegal and generally fucktardy things to go on and get away with it, and have no means of contacting them and are big enough to do so. They also violate your privacy by default and by their very nature.)

Let's just build some concentration camps and… well, that's not feasible. Nor is it really desirable. Nobody should be forced to behave in a certain way; they should be convinced to do so out of their own free will. But maybe it's a pipe dream. I know of some people who, IMO, have given up their human rights through their actions.
It can definitely be questioned whether there is any point in writing any of these articles, but when I so strongly feel that something needs to be done/said, or at least attempted, I have to give it a shot. Unlike the cancer, I do things because I really believe in them and want to improve the world — not just to ruin others' original work and keep everything shitty. Without having any scientific papers to back this up, I'm personally convinced that hanging in such communities regularly or too long actually causes brain damage.

I've noticed a trend that's impossible to deny. Things are cool until the general public gets a hold of it, it's all downhill from there. Myspace, Facebook, 4chan, etc. Do anybody besides teenagers, old ladies, and little kids really even use Facebook anymore? I know young adults are on there still, but they don't use it quite the same way they used to. It's more like a placeholder for family and people they went to school with.

A Horrid fact of life few are aware of. Cell system infrastructures, are built on the cheep. In emergencies they are the first to fail. Those who have switched from Land lines with local phone company, to Cable connect - Those cable systems were also built on the cheep.
AT&T Cell local towers have very small battery back ups when AC power fails. At least Verizon has diesel generator back ups. Phone companies can go for days or even weeks when local AC power fails.
During Hurricane Katrina, eventually every phone system failed. Only Ham radio kept communications going. WE rushed in Globalstar Satellite phones so emergency & Gov agencies could keep communicating. So Yes a Cell system in space can end up more reliable then Planet Earth bound systems. Of course hardly anyone can afford that kind of technology.

WE rushed in Globalstar Satellite phones so emergency & Gov agencies could keep communicating. So Yes a Cell system in space can end up more reliable then Planet Earth bound systems. Of course hardly anyone can afford that kind of technology.

Few outside of that business are aware that IBM - Oracle and several others still manufacture mag tape back up systems. Hard drives cost a fraction, yet there are still advantages for Mag Tape. I see both systems in mixed use in datacenters.
