Discriminatory. Don't force people to eat healthy. I mean, it's just soda too. So they can still get trans fat loaded cookies and shit?

Don't police peoples personal actions. If they want to spend some of their food stamps on soda, so what? It doesn't hurt anyone else. They aren't getting less food stamps.

Idiocy.

I don't agree with this. I would however think it's a great idea to ban the purchase of alcohol with food stamps. All I drink is soda, and I'm perfectly fine.

Also, @previous (jump !VIfloDyEYo).

Here is why it is banned:

Food stamps are around to feed people, to nourish them. Soda does not do that.

Why are soft drink manufacturers regulated by the FDA and the USDA if soda isn't considered a food?

Soda is a food and can be a part of a healthy diet, perhaps the state of New York should pay for nutritional education programs instead of doing this bullshit.

By that logic, drugs and lasers are food. The FDA is a big agency, and since both food and drink are consumed it makes sense to have the same agency regulating them.

Soda isn't healthy though. You can have it and still be healthy, and still be fit. The question is: Why should the government be paying for something like this?

No, by that logic those are not foods. Which they aren't.

Food stamps are for nourishment. In 3.5 oz of milk, you get calcium, protein, vitamin D, and the following:

> Energy 252 kJ (60 kcal)
> Carbohydrates 5.26 g
> Sugars 5.26 g
> Lactose 5.26 g
> Fat 3.25 g
> saturated 1.865 g

> Protein 3.22 g
> Tryptophan 0.075 g
> Threonine 0.143 g
> Isoleucine 0.165 g
> Leucine 0.265 g
> Lysine 0.140 g
> Methionine 0.075 g
> Cystine 0.017 g
> Phenylalanine 0.147 g
> Tyrosine 0.152 g
> Valine 0.192 g
> Arginine 0.075 g
> Histidine 0.075 g
> Alanine 0.103 g
> Aspartic acid 0.237 g
> Glutamic acid 0.648 g
> Glycine 0.075 g
> Proline 0.342 g
> Serine 0.107 g
> Water 88.32 g
> Vitamin A equiv. 28 μg (3%)
> Thiamine (Vit. B1) 0.044 mg (3%)
> Riboflavin (Vit. B2) 0.183 mg (12%)
> Vitamin B12 0.44 μg (18%)
> Vitamin D 40 IU (10%)
> Calcium 113 mg (11%)
> Magnesium 10 mg (3%)
> Potassium 143 mg (3%)

And that is why milk should be on food stamps.

It's ridiculous. There is no benefit. You want people to eat healthier? Great! Start with education. Not with disallowing a small portion of the population from using government benefits for it. It doesn't mean they will even stop drinking it.

People need food to stay alive, so it should be funded for those in need. They don't need soda, however

It's a way of punishing people on food stamps. Don't pretend it isn't.

Sure, if the program was started without allowing soda, that is one thing. It wasn't though. There is no benefit to excluding soda. It wasn't done because of a lack of nutritional value. It was pointless to do. Poor people drink more soda than others. It was a way of being big ole meanies.

People who use food stamps are also those most likely to use medicare and other state-sponsored medical services. The government also has every right to give handouts on its own terms - that's why they give food stamps and not just mad money to spend at the grocery store, shoe store, or crack house.

It isn't my fault you can't understand my point. I never said eating healthy is punishment. I am saying making a rule to disallow one particular type of beverage is meant to be a punishment.

If the system was made that way, I would think its perfectly fine. I just dont see a reason to spend resources to make this a law except as a way for people who hate "those lazy fucks on welfare" to stick it to those "lazy bastards." I think the intention of the law is to "punish."

@40,531 (A)
I see absolutely nothing wrong with that. I don't think its bad. Im not saying anyone is entitled to soda. Im saying to pass a law limiting soda seems like a nonsense thing to do. Why? People with money get to decide how to spend it. Taking away their choice is oppressive and ridiculous. If they have to eat healthy, everyone else should have to, as well. Should poor people not get to have a glass of soda once in a while, just due to the fact that they're poor? Besides, the reason that food stamps were even invented was so that people who usually went to food banks would get to choose their own meals, rather than being dished out something they might not like or aren't culturally familiar with.

Note I said 'extensive' list, and I mean extensive list. Not 'lol here have this meal today, this one tomorrow'. They can choose anything they like off the list, which should have been obvious. They'll have no excuses because free cooking classes are offered in the programme mentioned.

Something needs to be done, but not at the expense of those who are unfortunate enough to not be able to purchase food for themselves. Do you know how humiliating it is, in the first place, to have to rely on the government for your food? Admitting that you can't take care of yourself? Often times, these people simply can't get jobs. I know a woman who had a back injury in a car accident, and is now unable to work for a very long time. Do you propose that people in these situations should not get a pizza once in a while? A bag of chips?
The obesity rate is quite alarming, but targeting impoverished people won't do much good. If you honestly care about the obesity rate in my country, you should be more concerned about the nutritional habits of the youth than the nutritional habits of people in poverty.

Seriously? You have to be under a certain income level to receive food stamps. If you have no job, and no other means of procuring money for food, you do not have a choice. Food stamps are the only option. This places the *very* lowest members of society in a position that they have to get food stamps in order to survive. It is not a choice for those people. They might not need cheetos and coca cola to survive, and they'd probably be better off without them, but the government has no right to restrict a person's freedom to eat what they want to. Especially if that restriction is targeted to a specific group of people (ex. people with low incomes).

Where in the US did you go?

That's not what I was referring to at all. Asians immigrants who, for example, are given beans that they don't even know how to cook when they go to a food pantry.

Canada, Switzerland, and the Netherlands prescribe free heroin to addicts to prevent them from stealing to support themselves which is much better for the people that would have to deal with the theft. Also it's safer, it's not cut with anything, and a nurse is available, and means no unpaid trips to the ER room (would be paid for by the taxpayer).

It's worked out quite well, and honestly I think it should be done in the US.

Also, it means criminals make less money, which gives them that much less incentive to push the drug onto new customers.

Why not just give the addicts Subutex instead?

The clinics do offer it, and many clinics will users over after a time. Many addicts are turned off to the idea at first, and don't pursue it, but no addict will turn away a free hit of heroin and so that's how the clinic gets a chance to discuss alternatives. Those drugs are mainly helpful to people that have been addicted for a long time, that can't get high anymore, though, and are just good for staving off withdrawals, and are not helpful for early users who want to get high.

Oxycontin is basically heroin, and giving that out doesn't really help.

Has this been tried? Why wouldn't it work?

IV heroin is stronger than oral/insulfated Oxycodone, and that might be a reason.

But the programs they have now do work, it gives people a safe place, removes the burden of theft, reduces ER costs, keeps a human being alive and gives them a better chance of recovery, and hurts criminal gangs.

I actually listen to a very cool podcast run by two drug health workers. It's called Hooked, and it teaches people how to ingest hard drugs in less risky ways. It's on itunes, if you want to check it out.

I'll check it out. I learned a while back how to inject without collapsing the vein, and how to get clean needles, and avoid infection and all of that, but never ended up doing it. Not heroin btw.

I don't do any hard drugs, but I know people who do.

right, because that's not a sampling error. How would you feel if extraterrestrials came to earth, went only to the absolute shittiest place on it (New Jersey), and judged the whole planet based on that one location? It would be like me judging the UK just based of a short trip to N. Ireland.

N. Ireland is pretty much what you can expect to find everywhere else. Also New Jersey is heaven to starving West African people.

It is a snooki. They litter the landscape of post-apocolyptic New Jersey. Most of the population was safe in underground shelters, called "Vaults". Some, however, were unable to find protection from the nuclear destruction. The resulting radiation altered their genetic codes, creating these monstrosities, commonly referred to as "Guidos", or, by their scientific name: "Italians".
