Topic: I spilled beef with broccoli sauce on my computer and now it won't turn on

Fake anon !ZkUt8arUCU started this discussion 14 years ago #22,068

This is potentially the most expensive Chinese food I've ever ordered. Will my computer ever turn on? Stay tuned to find out.

10 Mile disagree.

Liquids are far more conductive then the dried STUFF Sauce probably has some vinegar in it as well which makes it even more conductive (acid) Dry and evaporates. Wet is NEVER the way to go with electrical anything.

He needs to evaluate the damage.

Anonymous F replied with this 14 years ago, 9 seconds later, 1 hour after the original post[^] [v] #348,272

For example from the link

What To Do When It Happens

If such dire circumstances occur, don’t panic! But at the same time, don’t underestimate the damage that inaction can cause. First, immediately turn off the computer if it was on when the spill happened. If the computer was off, do not, whatever you do, turn the computer on to check if it still works; the most important factor in reacting to liquid damage is to make sure no electricity powers through the machine, so turning the computer on is basically the worst thing you can do. Immediately unplug the power adapter, and if your computer is one where the battery is easily removable, do that quickly.
How To Proceed

From here, you’re playing the waiting game. Depending on how much liquid is involved, it would not be overcautious to wait a week or longer to try turning on your computer again. However, because of how carefully manufactured and tightly-fit computer components are, air doesn’t circulate to a lot of places inside, so water droplets can sit for weeks without evaporating. Some recommend sitting your computer in rice, which dries up water much faster (like putting a few grains of rice in a salt container to keep moisture from hardening it). However, having grains of rice in your computer can cause it’s own myriad problems.

Problem: I spilled broccoli and beef on my computer.
The solution: add rice

@348,275 (E)
Yea that is a bit over the top and besides Chinese food usually comes with rice.

What I do and have done this many times over the years. Open up electronics and dry off with clean towels. Then its a slow process and I use 100 Proof Vodka, and with towels and cue tips clean clean and dry dry. Bright light and close inspection and let dry because you cannot see moisture under IC's.

Sometimes it works and other times requires trouble shooting. With power on you end up with possible arcs that leave a conductive carbon trail. If you cannot see it you cannot clean it.

If it does not work you get to drink the remaining Vodka.

Anonymous E replied with this 14 years ago, 15 minutes later, 2 hours after the original post[^] [v] #348,280

It's not bad advice. I have used the rice trick on a few mobile phones with mostly positive results. But yeah, usually you want to add the rice directly to the brocolli and beef.

@previous (F)
> you get to drink the remaining Vodka.
This is good advice too. Leaving the device in a disassembled heap after cleaning while you drunk dial your ex-girlfriends and then pass out watching some movie you would otherwise never get to see is actually a good way to stop fiddling with the thing long enough for it to properly dry.

Well since you shut it off there is still hope. Give it like 48 hrs to dry and then try to turn it on. Open it up and put it in front of a fan or something in the meantime. Or use rice, that works too, but is most effective when the container is hella airtight. Good luck.

Also, take it apart as much as you can, even if that just means taking the battery out.

If you have any of those little bags of silica dessicant beads that are usually packaged with electronics and shoes, (I usually eat the ones I get, but you might have some lying around somewhere.) then you might consider putting that in an airtight container with your open, dissasembled laptop for a while.

Actually one reason Chinese are so healthy is because its mostly veggies with a tiny bit of meat. At least in USA its Beef. In China Rat is more feasible.

All that liquid has Soy sauce which as you know is Salty and Salt is one hell of a conductor. Even though most of the parts were made in China, they do not consider Chinese food part of a computers diet.

Guessing that worst case you use a mouse. I have cleaned several track pads-balls but only from topside with alcohol. Old mouse popping ball out to clean - never did see anything Chinese but sure could have been.
