I think it will, but for the opposite reasons that Vista was. Vista was considered a bloated memory hog. Windows 8 is lithe and minimalistic, requiring less power than Windows 7 or Vista to run. But, having fixed these issues, Microsoft had to fuck up the user interface beyond belief. When normal, non-tech literate people get ahold of it, there will be outrage.

8 Now has a possible edge. Apple win over Samsung. Unless Android finds a way around the lawsuit, Win 8 will end up cell phone popular, and tablets may follow. I hope not. Desktops? The real market is cell and tablets.

8 is so simple though. The only disadvantage metro has that it is a bit hard to control with a mouse but i believe that is fixed now-

Possibly. If the UI is as annoying as it's said to be, then it'll likely annoy the average user more than Vista's problems, which were more under the hood.

Not at all true.
Because no one knows how long appeals process will take. Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Blocked from Sale in the U.S. Apple is in court trying to block Galaxy S II Epic 4G & 6 other models, for sale in USA and other countries.
You can expect to see more win 8 phones until the appeals process is resolved. Same for tablets. Over the long haul open source will win out over Windows.

What gets me the most is how Microsoft behaved about the whole Start menu thing. They wanted to remove it, which is fine. But then they deliberately make it hard for other people to put it back in. Maybe it's cause I'm a Linux fag, but it strikes me as a dick move. The best way would be for them to put in an on/off switch.
But why even remove it? It takes up what, a 30x30 pixel space? Maybe a square centimeter or two on a modern monitor. And then replace it with a screen full of HUEG Metro tiles.
I'm sure someone will hack around it at any rate, though.

nah, linux is nice, but it's kinda like a kit aircraft. you get 49% of the parts, and the other 51% is you working to make it functional.
but really people just want to get from point a to point b with the least amount of effort possible.

It's decently easy to use in certain distros. Valve is starting to convert games to it, which was a major point holding some people from it, so it'll definitely see a rise.
It won't be a market leader, but you'll finally need at least two hands to count up all the users of it.

ubuntu with beryl was pretty cool. i made it all work on dual monitors too.
i just cut/paste whatever i needed from the internet into the console and it'd fetch whatever it was told and install it.

It was like a kit back in the old days (and still is with things like Gentoo) but Ubuntu and Linux mint are so easy to use now that my mom can use them (and she does). For the three computers I've owned, everything worked with Ubuntu out of the box, with default options. Installation consisted of putting the USB stick in, booting up, and clicking "next" a few times then it's done. No 1337 H4X0R-ing required.

No, it's fine. But tablets can't run real software like i use at work every day. Really only desktops are appropriate. Sometimes laptops. Tablets have their place, i see people using them like legal pads. But thats it really. Web browsing legal pads to take notes on.

Wot? Tablets will never replace a large screen desktop. Those who sit at a desk need a real keyboard & large screen. Add to the mix the need for powerful workstations aka Sun Solaris for full UNIX.
Currently one of mine has 21 open windows running individual data bases.

Windows 8 will suck sure, but people will buy it. They will buy it because they are dumb. At the end of the day, consumers always do exactly as they are told.
