So just as a one sentence background, in the 3rd edition of The Wealth of Nations, Smith adds a chapter in which he laments the system of Mercantilism, which he blamed on the government acting on behalf of a group of a few wealthy businessmen at the expense of the general welfare.
So my question was: what solutions (if any) did Smith offer to counteract the tendency for businesses to "get into bed", as it were, with business interests. Smith's solution was to hope that the elected politicians would have a good enough sense of justice and be of sound enough moral character to prevent that from happening. Presumably, he would want people to follow the moral theory he laid out in his Theory of Moral Sentiments.
Beyond hoping that politicians would be moral (lol), he didn't really have a solution, which is unfortunate, but what I expected.
