Apparently he's in call of duty as an easter egg. Also I can't even believe that was the /x/ meme that ended up going mainstream. I can't think of anything else that did. Even major shit like suicidemouse.avi, the grifter, and candle cove never got past like niche popularity. I guess maybe "Creepypasta", but even that's questionable.

Slenderman is fucking stupid, it's a guy with spindly arms, and a suit, that kills people. If you see him, it's too late. Yeah well then how are there even photos of.him? There isn't even a backstory, there are multiple ones, and they all suck. Yes even marble hornets.

This was a point in some of the earlier lore (though not the earliest lore). Basically he went after people who were obsessed with him, so he wouldn't be going after people who just happened to take a picture of him or who had only just started to follow him.

Actually there was an original backstory. It started on SA, I believe, but I could be wrong. From what I've read, the original backstory had him stealing children and appearing in photographs just before something bad happened. It's evolved a lot since then, but there's definitely an established original backstory.
