Topic: HTML5 is a joke. Utmeskiten won't play on most browsers, and looks like it uses Flash for the sound.

Anonymous A started this discussion 14 years ago #21,794

I only got it to play on firefox. Chrome, Safari, and Iron won't play it.

This shows up when inspecting it on chrome:

<embed name="sm2movie" id="sm2movie" src="./SM2/soundmanager2_flash9.swf" quality="high" allowscriptaccess="always" bgcolor="#ffffff" pluginspage="www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" title="JS/Flash audio component (SoundManager 2)" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" haspriority="true">

WTF is the point of having 'plugin-free open-standard HTML5' and then adding a flash dependency?

Also, when I press down the mouse to fire the gun, there is such a performance drop that all the people running go into slow motion while I am firing, or it just plain gets laggy after running for awhile.

Not to mention it makes my mouse disappear and I have to blindly click somewhere outside of the browser to get my mouse back. Ugly and frustrating.

HTML5: Poor performance, might only work in some browsers, other glitchy stuff.

Some HTML5 elements do have their uses. SVG is good for making graphs and stuff and not taking up much space, paired with the fact that it should be supported on mobiles. But for any kind of half way serious development effort with any real level of complexity, HTML5 is a joke.

Webmasters have two choices.
1: To forgo HTML5
2: To use HTML5 and force imbedding of Flash.
Otherwise coders would have to convert older programs and eliminate Flash. Economics 101.

I'd sooner use tried-and-true Flash and then have an HTML5 fallback.
