Topic: Young cannabis smokers run risk of lower IQ

Anonymous A started this discussion 14 years ago #21,790

> An international team found those who started using cannabis below the age of 18 - while their brains were still developing - suffered a drop in IQ.

> A UK expert said the research might explain why people who use the drug often seem to under-achieve.

> For more than 20 years researchers have followed the lives of a group of people from Dunedin in New Zealand. They assessed them as children - before any of them had started using cannabis - and then re-interviewed them repeatedly, up to the age of 38.

> Having taken into account other factors such as alcohol or tobacco dependency or other drug use, as well the number of years spent in education, they found that those who persistently used cannabis - smoking it at least four times a week year after year through their teens, 20s and, in some cases, their 30s - suffered a decline in their IQ.

I don't think kids should be smoking weed at all, they should just concentrate on their education. I smoked weed when I was 13/14 and it fucked me up.

I agree & disagree and say it should go something like this: There you have it kids. Yet another reason not to smoke weed ever! Unless you want to become psychotic, paranoid, schizophrenic, socio-phobic, amongst other mental conditions. Although smokers say its good for glaucoma and what not... In fact they are just denying their psychological addiction. Further, if they were your real friends, they would never encourage you to start in the first place. Smoking cannabis has no advantages whatsoever. However, if you disagree, then take it up. And unless you stop in due time, your life will be a waste. I've observed my friends for 30 years and note that all "dope" smokers did not either reach their full potential, or became psychotic, and anything in between.
If you think you can handle it, go for it and see what happens! Whereas I don't need to, cos I've been there, done that, and honest enough to admit my regret!
