Maybe extend the time before they auto-lock – a couple of weeks instead of one or something.

A lot of people find this place through Google and other search engines, when they find a topic which is relevant to them they're unable to respond, it alienates new users and frustrates existing ones. Pointless and retarded.

There's no point really in keeping old topics open indefinitely. If no one's posted in a topic for a week then it's probably done. If an old topic should be re-opened for some reason, send a Mod PM and a member of the mod staff will unlock it.
