Topic: Have you ever been told you have a foreign accent?

Meta !PARAdoxiHw started this discussion 14 years ago #21,437

I've been told I sound British, Irish, Scandinavian, and indeterminably European despite the fact I was born and raised in the US. Has this ever happened to you?

Same here and I have been accused of having a British accent. The guy who thought I was British was a little derpy though, and I may have just confused him by using long words.

lol

You make it sound like it's a heinous crime to speak with a British accent.

Try doing it in certain parts of the South. See what kind of reactions you get.

No, but I've been told that sound posh a few times in the past, which really makes no sense since I'm not posh at all.

I've been told the same even though I live in a "less well off" area.

When I moved to California people noticed I pronounce certain words differently. But usually I get "why don't you speak like a new yorker (as in NYC)" People forget New York is a whole state quite often.

No, i'm from texas. No one has ever mistaken my accent as "foreign," even in the UK everyone knew i wasn't a foreigner. Just a texan.

Of course over there everyone sounded funny.

I'm British but people tend to think I'm Australian when I go abroad, especially Americans.

This is probably just a personal hygiene problem.

I can fake a few accents, but my normal voice is never mistaken for foreign. Out of the states California has a pretty neutral accent compared to the others.

Once or twice, but never a specific country. Just like "where are you from?"
"Arizona?"
"No, where'd you get that accent?"
"what?"
I've also been told I sound like a faggot.

If I was actually from Liverpool I wouldn't have bothered mentioning the time someone once asked me if I was from Liverpool.
