The politics behind Windows 8, specifically Metro, is such a fucking mess right now. Microsoft can't say the M-word now, so now they are struggling to find a good alternative. But that doesn't mean they don't want you to use their little gimmick, as they have patched the ability to go straight to the desktop.
The designers don't hear about what you, or anyone else outside their little committee, think of their new OS, and how it should be improved. They clearly don't care about you or anyone but themselves, and fulfilling their egos seems to be their biggest priority.

Nope. They're just as bad, if not worse, than Microsoft right now. At least we have the OPTION to choose whether or not to "upgrade" to Windows 8. When Google changes something, they force it onto everyone and never give a way to roll back. YouTube gets the worst of this like-it-or-lump-it mentality. And their support is completely horrible in every way imaginable. If something fucks up, well, it's clearly your fault, so they will refuse to lift a finger to help you in case something goes wrong, such as if your Google account gets "suspicious activity". If that happens, then you can kiss your e-mails goodbye and start over with a new account because Google doesn't care.

I've never understood this insistence that all computing will eventually be on tablets.
Tablets by their design aren't as good as desktops in lots of important ways. Games, typing, storage space (inb4 cloud), attaching things like headsets and hard-drives, customisation, running and using multiple programs at once, ect.
I'm sure tablets will develop further and come into their own, but I can't see them phasing out desktops as much as you suggest.

IF? You downloaded Google as .exe then that version is still located in your original download files. So you CAN roll back to any version you downloaded. Recently they made a change on settings, so you may get stuck accepting a few things. I am using a prior version of Google and will for a while. I moved a registry setting so they CANNOT update Me
Consider buying a used Solaris with O/S Unix - NOT Linux.
Bottom line is multiple O/S available and each has advantages and disadvantages.

Agree with you because Tablets are really something larger then a cell phone yet not really a good choice for general office use. The future of Android is not limited to tablets or cell phones. So stay tuned to the future of what you and I want. I cannot wait until I can dump MicroShit, however I am forced by clients to use it for now. I do have multiple Sun workstations and they have a powerful Unix O/S which Android is based on.

i'll bother with windows 8 when i have a touch screen for my desktop. i've read that it's damn annoying to use metro with a mouse and keyboard since the layout is meant to be used with gestures.
also, i seriously doubt i'll buy a tablet device that runs windows any time soon, so, that means windows is dead to me. on an unrelated note what's a good learners distro of linux?

Oh i will, i'm not buying a windows based tablet, nor a touch screen for my desktop. I don't want 8 because 8 is optimized for tablets.
Just think of 7 as Vista SP3 and 8 as Windows Metro. Vista SP3 is optimized for desktops and Metro is for tablets. Giving them numbers just makes people think they need to get "the next one."
It's not the "next" windows, it's a totally different OS.
