I'm looking for one that is about when the reader or viewer learns about a thing that previously happened to a character that is supposed to be shocking or crazy, but the reader or viewer never actually finds out what the thing was, just that something happened and it's apparently pretty shocking or scandalous.

Example:

A: I came down to Townsville to get away from all the reporters after, you know, that thing with the Arab?
B: Oh my gosh, I remember reading about that in the news! Is it... true what they said he did with his pet elephant?
In this case, "that thing with the Arab" is never mentioned again as part of the plot.

Another example could be some "shocking photographs". People might make comments to the character who is supposedly in the photographs like "I didn't know you liked that!" and said character might get really flustered or show that they are incredibly embarrassed, but the reader/viewer never actually finds out what the photographs depict.
