Wot? In future you will make so much money the $40K will be chump change.

If it is Art? A future painting could fetch $ 1 Million per. If English a best seller could make you rich. A screen play for a movie could make you rich. If however you have the language skills of a Matt? Good for teaching English in China or a gig at McD's.

Holy Geezus fuck. Now I know you are USA based in California. North Cal as I remember. So when you decided on Philosophy as your major, you were well aware that only a PhD is useful. Teaching only!!! So what were you thinking? Not that people into Philosophy think, but you do get my drift?

Haha I am actually on the east coast. I did know that philosophy has a very narrow set of professional fields that directly relate to it, but I enjoy philosophy classes so much that I would be really unhappy majoring in anything else. I don't see a B.A. in philosophy as being especially useless though, at least not compared to other B.A.s like women's studies, English, history, communications, etc. Most B.A.s are pretty much interchangeable in terms of how they look to a potential employer on a resume, so I feel like I should study the one that appeals to me the most.
This conversation is not making me hopeful for my future.

I have this lingering suspicion that James Holmes, the recent Colorado shooter, went a little nuts when he did the math on his student loan debt. If at some point in the future you find yourself with an advanced degree and working at McDonald's with little hope of ever seeing your name on an influential essay or in a distinguished journal, remember there are other ways to get your name in print. :D

No such thing as debtors prison. If Homes did the math? Do you think he would choose to end up with bubbas, as cell mates who extend more then just a hand to his lower cheeks.

Degrees don't matter. Social networks do.
Having a degree (of any kind) is step one.
Exploiting friends, family and professional circles is step 2.

So add your $40K debt to your part (mine as well) to the $15 Trillion National debt (USA) and > The estimated population of the United States is 313,186,212 so each citizen's share of this debt is $50,724.87.
The National Debt has continued to increase an average of

Some people say a man is made outta mud
A poor man's made outta muscle and blood
Muscle and blood and skin and bones
A mind that's a-weak and a back that's strong
You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store
I was born one mornin' when the sun didn't shine
I picked up my shovel and I walked to the mine
I loaded sixteen tons of number nine coal
And the straw boss said "Well, a-bless my soul"
You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store
I was born one mornin', it was drizzlin' rain
Fightin' and trouble are my middle name
I was raised in the canebrake by an ol' mama lion
Cain't no-a high-toned woman make me walk the line
You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store
If you see me comin', better step aside
A lotta men didn't, a lotta men died
One fist of iron, the other of steel
If the right one don't a-get you
Then the left one will
You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

Haha, okay that wasn't as scary as I thought it'd be. Made it 111 floors with nothing worse than shadows jumping out at me and the occasional noise, but then I ran into one of those guys with the white face and he killed me while I was trying to jump over the railing to get around him.
Probably didn't helped that I watched a video of it before, though.
