A friend of mine says he filled up his car with premium unleaded and his MPG has been much better even after all the fuel is used. Could this be true or is it just BS?

No. The higher the octane, the more delayed the combustion in the combustion cycle. It has nothing to do with power or mpg.

Total Bullshit. IF the car required premium & non prem is used and car knocks real real real bad, the mileage would be just a little less. IF noticeable at all. Premium when not required will not add .01% to mileage.
Exception would be if 85, which is loaded with alcohol, is compared to regular or premium.

Higher octane fuel actually does the opposite in a normal car with zero modification, you will see a very noticeable drop in MPG, plus you will be paying anywhere between $.10 and $.50 cents extra for a higher octane fuel that is unnecessary. Its a lose/lose situation. There are far cheaper ways to gain fuel economy.

Like what? I normally drive quite aggressive and don't obey any speed limits, how can I improve MPG without adjusting driving style?

Get a fast diesel car and make a deal with a local farmer. Though that will just give you cheaper fuel, but it boils down to the same; saving money.

In my experience, grades of gas only affected mileage when in my scooter. It only had a gallon tank and when I would use premium vs the lower two grades, I would have to fill up once every 4 days, vs every two days.

Nitrogen in tires at proper PSI. A good set of spark plugs and wires. Removing excess weight like a spare tire. Using a less restrictive or clean air filter. Not using your A/C in the car, nor rolling down the windows. Coasting to a stop instead of braking hard.

It depends on the car, A big boxy vehicle like an escalade is going to have more drag with the windows down than say a prius.
In the city the windows being open is the best option, as stop and go traffic with the A/C on can increase fuel consumption by 20%. Using the A/C on the freeway uses 10% less fuel than city driving. Having the windows open and the A/C off is obviously a better option than the A/C on and the windows up, but when you are trying to squeeze the most money out of your fuel, you would be more willing to suffer a little extra sweat.

Whether they used new cars and just went by the specs (which seems a little sloppy) or drove control laps for each vehicle, they must have had some baseline to go by if they calculated a change in fuel consumption for each condition. Writing it up like scientific research probably wasn't the journalistic style they were aiming for in the article. You're right though, it would be nice if they mentioned that.
