In order to answer this question, one must first consider the definition of "hurt". If we take it to mean physical pain akin to cuts and bruises, as is implied by "break my bones", then words do not and cannot hurt, but if we look past the obvious and at the emotional aspect of things, then depending on the words, and their speaker, they do indeed have the power to hurt you. But then, is this the speaker, or the words that are hurting you?
Are words perhaps akin to a "messenger" in that they bring forth the message that the speaker wishes to convey? In that case, is it really alright to place the blame on the words, who only meant to deliver the message? Nay, I say that even if words were to hurt emotionally, it is not their fault, but the speaker's.
Words don't harm people.
