Topic: Need to boost Wifi signal

Anonymous A started this discussion 14 years ago #20,570

I need to boost Wifi signal since my house is pretty big and there is only connection in around half of it. I thought about just buying a bigger antennae for the router, but the existing one is like seized on and I can't remove it. Wifi boosters are too expensive, so what are my options? Can I set up another router somewhere else in the house or would my ISP block that?

Set same SSID and same security, but put your other WAPs on a different IP, and on opposite channels (So like if your original router is on 192.168.2.1, make it broadcast on channel 1, and then with your second put it on 192.168.2.2 and on channel 6)

Not if you want it to be a router. You could just convert it to be just a WAP for your network though. To do that just disable DHCP, leaving it running on your original router.

This is a wired solution, by the way. Maybe you could research WDS if you decide you want wireless repeaters after all

@OP
Setup a wireless bridge with OpenWRT/dd-wrt or something, it is easy. The bridge will relay the wireless signal. You could also set the router in client mode and then connect to it wired, or connect another AP to the client-mode router.

Pretty much the same thing as I said. Use WDS to create a bridge or use another router as a WAP. Your choice.
