Around 10-20 years ago, there was a certain thrill to seeing how far you could spread a piece of code and how sneaky and small you could make it. Now, a lot of the malware is aimed at collecting personal information, botnet recruiting, and identity theft. At one point, a lot of people who wrote these programs did it "just for kicks." Now that people keep their address book, personal details, and financial information on their laptops and phones, it's less of an academic exercise and more of a criminal enterprise.
