You are right, it's a horrible "meme". I think it's by far good, but the only reason it is popular is due to people liking it for purely an "acceptance" and "in" factor.
Of course they convince themselves it's some great, deep, beautiful thing/show...but the truth is that everyone only like it because everyone else does.
It is what is in now on the Internet, and it provides some sort of connection for the users to attach onto with one another. It's like pogs or bell-bottom jeans in the hippie era.
In reality though, the show is trite. I've watched episodes 1-8 to try and understand the "love" for it...to see if it was real or not...and MLP is just stale. The plots are nothing unique or original. The stories have been done to death before in past cartoons. The animation is just another flash cartoon as well. They are a dime a dozen.
The colors are pretty, but classic hand drawn animation is just so much more magical.
Tl;dr: My Little Pony- Friendship is Magic, is bad. People only like the meme because it is in to do so, and it makes you cool.
