Topic: If Robot Evolution becomes a reality...

Catherine !TGirlYJKXM started this discussion 14 years ago #20,122

Will they develop their own religion with us as it's centerfold?
After all, someone set the course for their evolution.

wouldnt that be hilarious when they get to were we are now.

"PRAISE BE STEVE!"
"stop your blashephmy or John will thrust you into the eternal junkyard"
<robot atheist goes onto on /r/atheism later at night: HOLY FUCK IM SURROUNDED BY IDIOTS FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU"

Would robot evolution be quicker, slower, or about the same to human evolution?

Futurists talk about the "Singularity" almost mystically, says Robert Geraci in Religion Dispatches — and scientists' promises of robotic salvation may one day rival traditional faiths.

This. Nerd religions are still religions.

What exactly is a nerd religion? I thought that would apply more to Star Trek, Doctor Who, and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic fans.

Most nerds know that fiction isn't real. The Singularity is something some nerds really believe in. One day the techno rapture will come and we will all live forever via nanobots with our 72 robot virgins in palatial smart houses. Basically replace a guy wearing a beard with magic for a guy wearing a pocket protector with techno-magic and viola! It's somehow not a retarded faith anymore.

So basically the singularity pretty much has the same amount of chance of occurring as the rapture does (very little if none at all)?

The chance might be higher, but it is still a matter of faith for now. Everyone thought we'd have flying cars and robot slaves and moon bases by now. Instead we have cellphones and internet porn. The predictions of futurists aren't that far off from ye olde prophets as far as reliability.

Is that their religion?

I believe they worship the dreaming dark god, Cthulhu.

Wait a tick, don't we kind of have robot slaves now?
Sure they aren't full blown humanoid, but they still serve us.

Depends on how you want to define it. Folks in the 50's expected perfect, super intelligent androids or at least Robbie the Robot. My Roomba has been known to lose a battle of wits with a chair leg.

Has the definition of robotic slaves changed since the 1950s?

No, we've just lowered our standards for robots. I find it hard to classify something like a Roomba as a slave in the same way I doubt anyone will ever call for the emancipation of microwaves. It's a device (hopefully) serving a very specific function. Once they can give speeches like the one at the end of Blade Runner about tears in rain then I will feel comfortable calling it robot slavery.

Robot evolution is real. But organic evolution is not, eh South Korea? http://www.nature.com/news/south-korea-surrenders-to-creationist-demands-1.10773
