It actually has more to do with exposure to free radicals, exposure to radiation and other carcinogens, and the degradation of the tips of our chromosomes (see telomerase).

Actually, there is no set limit on how many times a cell can regenerate. They degrade because the tips of the chromosomes, telomeres, degrade over time, due to all the things I just mentioned. Eventually, the telomeres degrade so much that it signals the cell to stop replicating. This causes aging. Telomerase is an enzyme that protects the tips of the chromosomes and slows down the aging process. With enough telomerase and cell can replicate indefinitely.

The telomerase breakthrough is a big leap forward. Combine that with a healthy diet full of antioxidants and all the other breakthroughs in cancer treatments and anyone under the age of 30 right now is probably going to live for a very long time.

It'd be prerty bad ass if they could make humans live so long that most people die in horrific and terrible accidents. Like crushed by a boulder, or fall from a 50 story building, otherwise they'll hook you up to the nanotank and rebuild you.
