Some recycling is a waste of time, and is super expensive to do. I know recycling cans is worthwhile though.
Personally, I think we should designate a remote island to our trash, and just send radiation blasts to vaporize the trash every few years.

In the future a laser drill will dig a hole in back yards down to the Magma layer. Then we simply send garbage that cannot be recycled into the hole.

We have all these useable resources that we don't need to dig them out of the ground to get, but instead we bury them in the ground in landfills and dig more resources up but there's less new resources and more garbage.

But given our current geopolitical reality, it's less damaging to the environment and uses less energy to dig up new resources than it does to drive trash all over hell. This shit's been studied.
Lots of things seem like "common sense" but don't really work out as planned. With the exception of metals, recycling is most certainly one of those things. People enjoy doing it because they feel they are doing something good, but they are ignorant to the truth.
