Okay whether you know it or not, I am in fact a huge Marilyn Manson fan. I've liked his music ever sense I could remember, the majority of my favorite songs are by him, I think he's a musical genius, all that jazz.
That being said I was actually pretty disappointed with "High End of Low", the album previous to "Born Villain", and after "Eat me, Drink me". it was more rock n' roll sure, but a lot of the tracks were just sort of empty, and honestly unappealing. "Arma Goddamn motherfucking geddon" sounded cool, but it was just this very cussy dance-rock commentary on pop culture. What is Manson TMZ now?
Okay, so now on to the good stuff "Born Villain", in this album Manson is clearly trying to take everyone back to his earlier days, those being the days he was much more popular. Some songs on the album such as "Hey, cruel world", sounded like they would be right at home on "Antichrist Superstar", and other songs like "Children of Cain", sounded like they belonged on "Holy Wood".
Also "you're so vain" the duet with Johnny Depp, is cool as shit. Cause it's fucking Johnny Depp.
This album has a very rock-dance sort of feel to it, you can groove to a lot of the songs, though the songs aren't nearly as electronic as anything on "mechanical animals", or "golden age of grotesque". The lyrics are often clever, filled with neat little allusions, and great lyrical styling. It's far better than "High End of Low".
Okay, now here's the bad news. Not a single song packs the same punch as the big hitters on "antichrist superstar", or even "Holy Wood", none of these songs contends with "Irresponsible hate anthem" in the sense of controversial lyrics, not a single song is as dance-ready as "king kill 33", not a single song is as deep or thought provoking as "man that you fear", or "count to 6 and die".
In fact, and quite unfortunately, not a single song on this album even struck an emotional chord with me, I remember a lot of people started disliking Manson at "Eat Me, Drink Me", I liked that album, it was a different direction, but it was much more personal, and "Just a car crash away", almost made me cry. The lyrics on this album are just sort of half-attacks on pop culture, and a lot of just "look how much of a dark person I am" rape/violence songs. None of the latter are anything close to the highlights of Antichrist Superstar btw. Maybe we're out of things to fight for, and maybe Manson doesn't know how to be relevant without being repetitive anymore, but there's this huge feeling like he's just about run out of things to say about himself, or about the world around him.
The lyrics while being clever, and stylish, aren't even nearly as stylish or clever as those on "Golden age of Grotesque". Not to mention a lot of the songs on "Born Villain" sound the same. Dance-rock-groove, punchy lyrics, shouting over guitar chords, repeat.
All of that negativity aside, this is one of the best albums I've listened to in a while, it's a lot of fun, and I was happy to listen to it. I think I'm just going to have to deal with the fact that Manson will never put out another "Mechanical Animals", and he won't put out another "Antichrist Superstar", I sincerely believe his best work is behind him. And being such a huge fan of his, that disappoints me.

I used to be really into Marilyn Manson too. I noticed that your top four are all from the same album. Yeah, I used to like all of them when I was younger but I've deleted all of them except Antichrist Superstar and Mechanical Animals. They're pretty legit.

They're pretty much all completely different. What you like by him is really specific to your own tastes. Like I said above, I like Antichrist Superstar and Mechanical Animals the best. Those albums were definitely when he reached his artistic peak.

Yeah, those are my favorite albums as well. And I agree with you, his albums are very diverse.

Honestly, the beautiful people is just his biggest single. On Antichrist Superstar there are several songs that are much more aggressive, and honestly better in my opinion ("dried up, tied up...", "the reflecting God", and of course "Irresponsible hate anthem")

Not at all, I've just listened to all of his songs like 1000 times, I know what I like the most. Both "this is the new shit" and "(s)aint" were on my list, which are big singles.

Yeah, I getcha. I used to worship the guy, now I'm just kind of like "this is pretty good". His newer stuff is so disappointing though, maybe Antichrist Superstar was his best album because Reznor was involved.
