Okay, I guess this is something that affects me personally. I was just wondering if it's a humanity thing since humans believe in higher beings that are larger than them.
Basically I kind of take comfort in thinking I'm small. Especially when I view the Earth in a universe perspective. Of course, maybe it's because I'm tall (6'1").

Usually I give he or she a pass and answer the question. Recently I lost my cool on another forum. Comparing the current topic to what he or she or the Heshe has put up in the past --- Its a lot better. Yea I know its not PC to use the term Heshe but hey where do you draw the line. Transgender no longer seems to apply.

When I was a child, I would often have thoughts of becoming larger or smaller and it would flip-flop between the two; first becoming incredibly tiny and then a large morphous mass. I ceased to be human in these visions and would just assume a random shape.

I've always credited such beliefs to a human desire to believe that there is a plan and believe there is someone in control rather than a desire to be small. Religion satisfies that for a lot of people. I think it's part of the draw of conspiracy theories too.

The problem here is that religion is a lot older than guns. Your definition of "top" seems to include the ideal circumstance of you being prepared and having an arsenal at your disposal. There were plenty of religious beliefs around when lions and packs of wolves and large stampeding creatures were still a danger that one might realistically encounter.
I can see how being clever enough to hunt and avoid predation by other animals might lead us to think ourselves above them, but how does that necessitate religion? It seems like you would have to already have an idea that there was some plan or creator before you started using it to explain things. I can see how we would fit our apparent dominance into our religious beliefs, but the idea that our apparent dominance would require us to create religious beliefs doesn't sound as likely.
