Knock on my door 8:30 this morning.

Neighbor across the hall tells me she needs my help. She found a kitten on her balcony, she thinks it may be from the apartment next door, but they're not home.

Can I keep the kitten in my apartment until we figure out whose it is? Her dog doesn't get along with cats.

I politely decline. She demands to know what she's supposed to do with it?? And is now mad at me.

wtf? Not my problem...

What do you expect with a tripcode like that? You're obviously considered to be the local authority on cats.

But yeah, I can emphasise. My old neighbour tried to stop us from building our conservatory for no reason other than boredom.

But if it's not those people's cat? Becomes my responsibility.

It's a nice neighborly thing to do but not my problem.

okay, most things arent your problem. I'd feel bad about leaving a kitten alone like that, but whatever.

She had the kitten in her apartment. It wasn't being left alone, she was just inconvenienced by the cat *she* decided to let in.

I'm moving apartments this week and won't be able to figure out the logistics of doing the lost/found thing or re-homing it if it turns out not to be from this building.

@OP

Did the neighbor know you were packing up and moving?

Moving is a butthurt of work-problems-headaches. Last thing anyone needs is a new animal to deal with during this messy time.

No, didn't mention it. Maybe should have, but I don't think people should have to explain saying no to massively inconvenient favors like that.

Me thinks most people would understand.
