Fact is I truly have fun with all these signs of the apocalypse. End of worlds stuff is fun to read. As a fan of Sci-Fi it makes for good reads and movies.
And re my Work - I see evidence of the real possibilities CURRENTLY re the what If's, with regard to Sun activity current sunspot cycle til 2014, increasing the possibility of a Cosmic Katrina.
A Megaflare hit Planet Earth in 1859. One of that level could Apocalypse Planet Earth, to a high degree.

nowadays power stations and important computers etc are shielded and or protected adequately against something like that.. i know the one you mean, it killed telegraph lines... the worst to occur now is perhaps personal equipment damage and chronic brownouts/blackouts for perhaps months, but no apocalypse planet earth.. west in particular will be VERY interested in keeping the banking system IMF intact and functioning properly... it cascades down from there.

In 1989 a Super severe geomagnetic storm caused the collapse of the Hydro-Quebec power grid in a matter of seconds as equipment protection relays tripped.
A Megaflare equal to the one of 1859 would burn out substation transformers across the globe. Rebuilding-replacement of the very large transformers could take years. Magnetic induction of ground current paths are a serious problem nor is there any form of shielding.

Of course all that really happens is that WE loose power for a year or three and Cell systems are not built for any high level anything. Nothing like the old phone system. Short term or no power back up.

Running real short of time re work so quick memory says several days to fix. Back then connections to East were severed which is no big deal re cascade mess up.
A fast look at history and found this but no time to confirm wiki

My memory does not recall the 1921 event referred too. You can look up that one.
One real issue and its what I deal with is: Satellites get hit on a regular basis. They are designed to a degree to be hit. Silicon is pre damaged in factory. However they cannot be shielded from a massive flare. And when parts are hit, they may take days-months- a year to show up as serious damage. Believe it or not - Stuff grows - Ion flow that can build conductive bridges inside parts and on the outside circuit paths.
Have to get back to some serious work issues or I would show some lovely pics of what these Purple plague crystals look like.
