Desktop when you have room for them is always more better. Less compromise in design - heat and total over all computer power.
Games are always better on big screens. One has to use an external screen on a lap top for decent game playing. One reason X-Box etc is so popular.
Not an expert in this by any means - after having to repair laptops and I have several and desktops. DESKTOPS whenever possible in my book. Besides room for all kinds of extras later.

Those 7 items right there puts you at about $820, leaving $180 for monitor, keyboard, mouse, and software, if you need any of those things. That set up will give you one of the latest 22nm processors, plenty of overclocking headroom, a good video card for your games, and a blu-ray drive for watching high-definition movies.

Not really. But putting the RAM and GPU into the slots can be quite frightening for a first-time builder. And with this setup, MOLEX isn't so bad to deal with.

I'd be willing to do it for you for free if you lived close by, or if I had some way of getting the parts and then safely getting them back to you. It's not too difficult. I could possibly step you through it via webcam. Hardest part is just getting all case connections hooked up to the motherboard. I could even help you overclock it.

Tis not however if its the first thing you have ever built? Find someone at work or a friend who has and buy a huge bag of M&M's and other treats and invite friend to be available for advise and help. You will feel like a zillion after the build. Its all plug and play however if you have NEVER burned in a hard drive? You do want someone around who has cause it can seem to take a looooong time which is normal but of course you would have no way to know what is normal.

He knows I can get around that shit. keeping me from being able to view images is enough to make me whine, but not enough to make me consistently use a proxy.

Yea that first Hard drive imaging can end up with frustration. I sure remember wondering if if if it would ever work. No two set ups are ever the same.

At 128GB it's not for mass storage, so you would still need the 500GB hard drive I recommended, but with just all the basic stuff on an SSD it is ridiculous how much it improves performance.

I have my current AMD overclocked 25%, from 3.0GHz to 3.75GHz, on the stock air cooler. It's currently at 29 degrees Celsius and has never broken 40.

AMD Athlon II X2 250 (3.0GHz dual core)
Not counting the SSD I only spent about $300 on the build. I regret not getting a better CPU but hey it's running at 3.75 and with the SSD it's the best computer I've ever owned.

Being Engineer I know CPU's work more better the hotter you can get them...at a price of course in terms of MTBF. Jacking up the voltage and overclocking - Just say I am not a pardon the pun FAN of such.

Bro is correct. You can do it. However unless you are some kind of dragon lady? Finding someone in your hood who has done this and can be around if need be is a real good idea. Locating someone on Craigs who might hit you up for $35 and comes with a small list of local people who you can call first to verify that the person was helpful and not out for hitting you up for more money.
Massive number of people build them with the plug and play. Slide boards in to slots. Hook up cables and they only go in one way.
Or having a place that comes highly recommended in the hood from a web search that you can take it too at the very end for inspection and that oh so loooooong of loading up say Windows 7etc - That very first time you format the drive can be nail biting re poor user friendly feedback of process.
Oh and keep in mind that techs at say Best Buy work on the side. Also there are people out there who buy and build with all that you want for a mark up.
