actually the only thing that has true intrinsic value is labor.
Sorry, OP.
If you want my water you're going to need to put in a days work on the mutated pumpkin fields.
but, your shiny metal is worth something though, the dumber pumpkins are easily fascinated by shiny bits of worthless garbage. While it's distracted you can eviscerate it's thorax, and they're much easier to deal with after that.
But watch out for the bigger, smarter pumpkins. They don't have eyes for bits of tin or colored pieces of glass. So, take this broken lawn mower blade and as much gold as you need to pepper the ground and i'll see you in the infirmary after dark.
With some water.
We'd give you guns and ammunition but it's far too valuable to use for farming.
What, do you think ammunition grows on pumpkin tentacles?
Get to work, slave!

I know. That's mostly my point. Iron can be used to make buildings, weapons, vehicles, etc. Gold is useful only insofar as many people think it has some value. Perhaps its value also comes from its rarity, but that's negligible compared to the amount of value it has simply because people think it will continue to be valuable. If the economic system collapsed overnight, it would take some time for gold to become valuable again (if it ever did), whereas iron, food, water, people, etc. would immediately become high-value assets.

Trade allows you to get anything you want and need, as long as you have the money. Gold is the perfect medium because it is both scarce and easily found (i.e. jewelry stores).

well gold has many important uses in electronics and technology but that aside most of those conventions would be broken down in a post-apocalyptic future. we would be set back ages in societal advancement (simply because of the lack of overall manpower and intellectuals who can comprehend/manufacture/purposefully use such technology) but i'm just reinforcing your point

well, people are pretty fascinated with shiny bits of things. we're like the mutated pumpkins in that respect.
it'll always be used for things, collected, and sometimes traded, but without a society to back the idea of it as a currency then it'll have less value than things people can use. in a post-apocalyptic world gold would be useful as ornamentation. but not much more.
i can trade a gold necklace today same as 2000 years ago, and i bet i can do it in a post-apocalyptic world too.

Barter is a fucking joke as far as trade is concerned. It's always been grossly inefficient compared with monetary systems and there's nothing special about post-apocalyptic society that's gonna change that fact.

Historically, civilizations who embraced monetary systems of trade raped and murdered those who insisted on sticking with barter systems. Literally, raped and murdered!

The latter, maybe, though if he only cares about his own survival and has what he needs, what does he care? The point of currency is to provide a reliable means of trade that doesn't depend on pure luck/murder, and can be stored indefinitely (along with hand lotion, possibly rendering the second one a moot point).

what? you think that the people clinging to currency would do so well for themselves, that they would effectively wipe out everyone else? Seriously is this MM?

Maybe, but fiat currency is either paper, material that is probably not as hardy and durable as metal, or exists solely as an abstract concept in the form of electronic money. Also, there's already a fuckload more of it printed today than should be: it's entirely possible that with a drastically smaller population, money won't even be scarce enough to trade, for all we know.

Oh my god you're fucking retarded. Let me ask you this: in this fictitious post-apocalyptic society were talking about, is it even possible for two people to communicate? If your answer is yes, then guess what? There's at least one system of rules that's survived right there. So long as people survive, there will be systems that survive. For people are compelled to build upon systems.

And that's all it really takes for trade you know, two people who can communicate. Two people with mutual desires. It's like sex really. Tell me sex doesn't exist in post apocalyptic society and I'll laugh. Tell me monetized trade doesn't exist and I'll feel sorry for you.

Exactly! Your sammich will have beem eaten long after your gold is still gold. Once you get that, you'll get what I'm saying.

But seriously I need to go now. I'm bored by your stupidity. Perhaps the Jews are superior after all. I never have to argue about such things with them.

your arguments are bad because it presupposes there's a society in place where all the people hold the same standard of value and enforce it.
after the apocalypse we'll each individually be lucky to trade a blanket for a bit of jerky.
you'd best hope jesus never returns and there isn't an apocalypse
you can't seem to fathom that when society collapses so does your valuable currency.

your willingness to go for petty insults is why i know you to be less intelligent than you think you ought to be.
gold remains gold, but the concept of it as a currency is what changes. you're unwilling to separate gold from currency.
you seem to think that it has some kind of special value that makes gold transcend itself and magically be valued by people who don't need it.

Gold sammiches. They don't work. The hierarchy of needs will be right on down to the bottom. Food, water, shelter. Anything beyond that be of no value until society begins to stabilize itself again and some fuckwad figures out a way to bring Jersey Shore back on the air.
