You should be careful in all cases. Be wary of anything with words like "self-starter" or "be your own boss", especially when they're jobs with no experience needed, as they're usually trying to sell you their business opportunity rather than a real job. We wary of any sort of sales jobs where there's no base pay offered up front. If you've never had a job before, your best bet right now is to just find something in retail. Retail blows, but it's the easiest way to get hired with no experience, and they offer you steady pay with no gimmicks. I would avoid the restaurant business.

I've never worked in fast food and neither has anyone else in my family, but I do have family members who have worked in the restaurant business and fucking hate it. Working for tips is bullshit. Even if you make a lot of money, it's still bullshit in principle. And yes, avoid fast food too, as it's the same bullshit but without the tips. Unless you have a plan to become the manager of a fast food place in a few months, forget it. Retail sucks, but if you learn good customer service skills and stick with it, there's at least room to prove yourself and move up. That isn't going to happen at McDonalds. With the way the economy is today, without a degree and/or connections to get you internships or apprenticeships our whatever, retail's the only way to go.

I dunno. Like I said, I have never worked in fast food, and none of my family members have worked in fast food, but that sounds like all the more reason to avoid it. Most fast food places are still paying minimum wage. Most grocery stores and other retailers pay above minimum wage even starting out.
Like I said, if you're smart, learn good customer service, act professionally and show a good work ethic, you can move up in retail. I don't recommend staying in retail, but it's better than a job that goes no where at all.

In my area, almost all do. I don't know anyone who started out minimum wage at grocery stores. My first job paid me $7 (minimum wage was $6.25 at the time) and my second job started me off at $8 then very quickly moved me up to $8.50.

You should put in applications everywhere, hope that you get at least one interview, and take the best offer, assuming you get an offer. It can take a while sometimes, so you have to be patient. I've heard Target is one of the better places to work.

Big companies, sure. Most small companies no.
You should also consider temp agencies--you'll probably start off with a shit assignment or two, but if you are reliable, it is very possible to get decent work that way. A lot of companies use temp-to-hire positions as an extended job interview with less risk for them, especially when the economy is bad.

You'll either have a phone interview (on the spot most likely for something like retail, so be prepared) or be asked to come in person right away. I've always really liked the advice on this blog, http://www.askamanager.org. She responds to a good number of questions about interviewing from new job seekers.

Terrific advice. Major companies use a scanner on documents submitted and use software to look for key words as a major part of the search process. You are at the mercy of how a computer looks at you before any human has a chance to look at what the computer sees.
Turns out that I had an item in my cover letter that was not in my resume. That single one word "mention" ended up getting me one hell of a position. Confused me in the interview process -- Long story for later.
They never tell you to not submit a cover letter. Mine were copypasta just as my resumes were copypastas to match the company/job I was applying for.
