C'mon man, you have to admit this is pretty fucked up. Freedom of speech is one of the most fundamental human rights. It's the first amendment to the U.S. Constitution for a reason. Some people might not like his comments, but that's none of their god damned business. Anyone should be allowed to go on Twitter, or anywhere on the internet for that matter, and spew out all the most hateful, ignorant, racist shit they want because that's their right and if people don't like it, they simply ignore it. It's sickening that someone can even be charged and arrested for tweets, let alone sentenced to 8 weeks in jail.

Even SOPA wouldn't give the government that much power though. In the U.S., even in a civil court this case wouldn't go anywhere because the tweets weren't harassing anyone, let alone get arrested for it, let alone actually serve time.

It's just a difference of cultures. The USA has a bill of rights, generally people are aware of what "freedom of speech" means due to the first amendment. The British public have no grasp of this concept, they don't appreciate the role free speech should play in a civilized democracy and really do not care while parliament shits out endless legislation raping every civil liberty that ever existed.
It really pisses me off when I hear MPs or other high ranking individuals talk about this, they say stuff like "We can have freedom of speech but" - stop right there motherfucker, as soon as you put any kind of restriction on what people can say there is no longer freedom of speech. Basically, no-one cares about this and nothing will happen while more and more people get incarcerated for typing something that may potentially offend some individual and some point in time.
