Standard transmissions are for stupid teenagers and truck drivers.

Not using automatics doesn't make a country third world at all. Pretty sure that most people in the richest European countries use manual cars.

Meowth replied with this 14 years ago, 8 minutes later, 5 hours after the original post[^] [v] #313,983

I should also point out that if I were living in a heavy traffic area I wouldn't prefer a car with standard transmission. Especially during rush hours.

Again this is one of the common misconceptions amongst automatic drivers, their irrational fear of traffic and stopping on a hill. Once you're used to driving manual none of that stuff is really a problem, you have everything committed to muscle memory and work automatically. Unless you're American, maybe then you would start punching the steering wheel and screaming FUCK THIS FUCKING TRAFFIC WHY THE FUCK DID I BUY A MANUAL FUCKING GOD DAMN IT I HATE HAVING TO PUSH THAT CLUTCH DOWN IT BURNS SO MUCH CALORIES

Butthurt. Some cars I wouldn't even want a standard transmission. Common misconception with ricers. Also saying, if I ever had the money, some cars I want don't even have an option to have standard transmission. Nissan GTR doesn't come with a standard transmission. Not saying that I'd ever have the money to get one, but I can't say. Also, ignorance is a bitch, ain't it? Pretty sure I'm enough people here know that I love my cars.

There are no benefits of driving a standard vs an automatic outside of a few niche situations.

I wanted to find out the ratio - Wiki says this is not true for Western Europe.

"As of 2008, 75.2% of vehicles made in Western Europe were equipped with manual transmission, versus 16.1% with automatic and 8.7% with other."

I want to drive that. I don't know how well it would fare on a freeway because I think it was intended for tight city traffic, but america needs more small cars like that!

They're probably not street legal in America. They're like scooters with car frames around them. They probably fail every safety test. I'm sure they really are great for people just getting around small cities in Europe, but in the US we have enough slow drivers on the freeway. They're basically motorcycles for people who don't want to ride a motorcycle. It's just a shame that you can't buy a motorcycle in this country with a similar price tag.

My point is I didn't claim our safety standards are better, they're just different. There are probably cars too small to pass US standards and there are probably cars over here that are way too big to pass European standards.

Faceo !PZmcClOUDk replied with this 14 years ago, 27 seconds later, 2 days after the original post[^] [v] #314,752

@314,749 (dw)
We do tests that are based on real world crashes that happen here. We have larger cars, so for example, a side impact test would be done with a sled that's shaped like a truck and weighs as much a truck because apparently, people who drive trucks are retarded. I think 70 something percent of people who are T-Boned get T Boned by a pickup truck or SUV.

And then there's the frontal offset test which simulates smacking into another car while traveling at about 30 mph, again based on real world conditions.
