360 doesn't have a browser, PS3 one is alright I guess.

Is it able to do most things that computers can do? Can you buy something to add this function to a 360?

The PS3 browser is very meh-tier. It's not really great but it functions ok. You are far better off using a smartphone for internet capabilities if money is an issue. Don't waste your time on a console, just get a good phone.

I actually want a console for gaming, but would like to be able to use it for other things as well.

well in this case you're going to get a lot of "lol just get a pc" replies. the in-between is a ps3 for console games and yeah it has a browser which isn't great but it's not bad (i think most javascript is kind of fucked up on it, it's difficult to browse even with a bluetooth keyboard) but there's really not much which is an "all-in-one" package so that's what you have to deal with. it most depends on what you want to do with it.

In that case PS3 is great because you've got the browser, as well as the BluRay player, and internet apps for things like Hulu and Netflix. Xbox360 has apps for Hulu and Netflix, but you have to pay for XBox Live just to access them and that's bullshit. Online play is free on PS3.

they mostly work okay if you can use a bluetooth keyboard and mouse and get used to how they function. they format kind of wonky but you can make use of them. i had a friend who used a ps3 browser when his computer broke and he did things just fine. youtube as well. so long as you have a good internet connection, go with that.
plus added blu-ray player!

PS3 has an app just for Youtube and text based sites shouldn't be a problem.

just dont expect the same kind of streaming service you get on youtube (it works but not as great) and just having to learn the controls with a PS controller to help you navigate. it's fine for email and other basic things.

I know that back before the 360 upgraded the dashboard again you were able to use Windows Media Center and browse the web. Using third party shit on your computer of course under the Media Center files. Don't know if that still exists, but it was decent. Also, PS3 browser always freezes on me.

360 has more cheap games I think and just more in general but live costs money and its only good for gaming and movies
