Topic: My girlfriend's grandmother is dying. I don't know what to do.

Broseph !!fxnDb+Ve4 started this discussion 14 years ago #18,976

Image went missingHer grandmother pretty much raised her, so for her it's almost like losing her mother. I want more than anything to be there for emotional support, but she's just sort of shutting the world out right now to cope with it. Even if I was there, I can only say or do so much. I feel like she's being stubborn and I don't think the way she's dealing with it is healthy, but I respect that she has to deal with it in her own way.

Anyone else know that feeling when you want to help someone you really care about but they just sort of shut you out and will not let you help them? It's sort of like when you have a friend with a drug problem. You're not sure whether you should respect their wishes and let it go or risk pissing them off by forcing your way into the situation because you feel it's best in the long run to do something about it. It's just a shitty, helpless feeling.

I'm leaning that way, yeah. It just feels like shit when there's nothing you can do. I needed to vent about it.

Minichan is not an appropriate medium to discuss this type of thing.

Your online community is dying, broseph. How does that feel?

Men like solving problems for women. You can't solve this for her, so don't fall into approaching it like this.

She probably needs time to go through grieving and acceptance in a private way before she opens up. Just make time for her when she needs you. Take care of all the other shit she probably doesn't want to bother with right now and give her some space in the meantime.

Yeah, you're right. I know I can't solve it, I just want to be there for support. I'll be there when she needs me.

I would download some of her favorite movies, get her a wine cooler, and try to relax. If you can go with her to visit.

Grandparents eventually die. It's normally not something people freak out about.

Yes, everyone dies eventually and most of us will have to deal with losing our grandparents and parents in our lifetime. It is normal to freak out about it, because it's hard to cope with. If you weren't an autistic sweaty mess you'd understand that.

For fuck sake, you bawww for months over some girl "manipulating" you over the internet, but you think it's abnormal for people to get emotional over dying relatives. Kill yourself already.

I'd just like to point out that no one would freak out if you happened to die, either. And there's no need to wait till you are a grandparent! (Not that that's a remote possibility for you.)

If you need help deciding on a method, we're here to help.

She's doing much better now. One reason she's been so stressed out is because she has power of attorney and has barely been able to leave the hospital with everything that's going on, but her mom is taking over for her starting tomorrow so she'll actually get a break.

I really appreciate the support from everyone in this thread.

Complicated family drama. They're trying to work shit out before her grandmother passes away, which is another stress factor, but things seem to be looking up.

I don't think so. She won't talk much about the family drama. I thought she was on good terms with her mother, but apparently since her grandmother had a large role in rasing her there's something going on there.
