I used to work for and now consult for the single largest user of the technology (28nm Chips) which are the basis for both of the Graphic cards. Huge huge major problems in the foundry re yield. Of course this will be solved but for the momento is NOT.
Back when Intel did all their own foundry work, this sort of thing wood never happen.

I have two GTX 680's for a special project - Not Games because the end item will be 4,000 pixel digital cinematography. Not my area of expertise anymore so I am about to hand this consulting gig over to someone else. I had to get help from former employer to get the chips for the 680's.

I agree. I plan on just getting a 7770. It's more than enough power, and for those 2% of games that require the extra power, I'll play them when the card suggested to play them is less than $150.

Wood b except there power hungry by comparison which is no problem for CAD work stations or gaming PC's. This is for a hand held device and of course the 680's as they stand are bulky and will be stripped way down and in the end all on a folded new circuit board. Its all breadboard in development for proof of concept....It will however be almost the same size, but not the same weight as the final design goals.

I don't have a crossfire motherboard, but crossfire is really not very cost effective. It's more effective to use the money you would have spent on 2 cards to get a single better card. I could get get 1 7770 now, and get another to upgrade to 7770 crossfire later when it's cheaper, but with the extra cost of a crossfire board, it's still debatable whether it's more effective to do that or just upgrade to a newer card. I think people really just do crossfire/SLI for the bragging rights. Right now I'm still using an overclocked 9600GT and all my games are playable.
