that's actually an interesting question and I know the answer.
If you live in creative mode, when you get past bedrock you can't dig any further because there's nothing there.
But if you live in survival mode, you'll just stop at bedrock. Hope that helps.

I think it depends where you live, but if you're a home owner you can dig to the earth's core if you want. They actually need your permission to do things like build sewer lines. (you only experience problems like that if you buy a home in a new community obviously) Mineral rights (if you find Gold, is it your's?) are usually discussed in the contract of your home. Usually suburbs/packed togrther houses don't have mineral rights, but larger properties usually do.

I think you're right and that's a good explanation, but it also depends on local ordinances. For example, even if you have mineral rights, I'm sure you'd still need all sorts of licenses and permits if you actually wanted to start digging into some sort of mine. You also need drilling permits to go past certain depths and stuff like that.
