Reading about the historicity of Mormonism I enjoyed this little quote by Richard Bushmann, who is a faithful Mormon but also claims to be an accurate historian:
"Passion and belief are certainly not requirements for historical inquiry, but neither are they crippling handicaps. Once we relinquish, as we must, the "noble dream" of objective history, personal commitment becomes a valuable resource…Contrary to the idea that belief closes the mind, our passions open our eyes and ears. Ironically many of the staples mentioned in their sacred books were things such as cattle, milk, etc. that did not exist in North America before Christopher Columbus had arrived to the Western Hemisphere. Apologists aim to change the definitions of these loosely to fit their meanings.
