I knew someone like this who others referred to as "The Mantis" because they had a very gaunt style of body language... tall, thin, quick mannerisms, hands drawn like a mantis. When he would reach out to someone and touch them on the shoulder when speaking this is what gave him his nickname although he was never aware of it. Mildly creepy to say the least.

Sort of like Nosferatu. But this is being extreme.

So, start working out and working on your body language. You're lucky you're skinny as hell. You don't have to worry about losing any weight. All you need to do is lift weights, strength train and drink protein shakes to bulk up and you're golden. It's not like you need to become a body-builder, just put on enough muscle to have a solid frame. If you put your mind to it, you'd look awesome in a month.

why do your posts always sound so condescending

Do you have a tendency to touch others (by this I mean on the arm, shoulder, stomach, neck or head, etc) when you talk to them?

I was actually complementing him, and trying to help him. Maybe you just hate me so you give me a condescending text voice.

Well, at least you're conscious of it. Being aware of your body movements is probably a good first step toward changing your habits, if that's what you want to do. Although, now I'm picturing you walking around like "The Count" from Sesame Street, and picturing you as some muppet vampire is kind of amusing.

So it's something you're just now noticing then? That's good, but also not good. Then again, I think everyone thinks they look/sound a little weird when recorded. I think it's just a self-consciousness thing. But being aware of your mannerisms is still a good thing.

I think that's a big difference for what I was thinking. It's a matter of how much you can keep your hands to yourself otherwise nobody will really notice. When you project your body language onto others it starts to become very apparent to others.

You don't want to be too careful though. If you always keep your arms crossed or your hands in your pockets, it sends out a defensive body language. It basically says "I'm closed/I'm not interested in you/I'm going to distance myself from you." Close your arms in the middle of a conversation, and you can immediately notice the other person will begin to act differently if you're paying attention.

I see this mistake a lot at bars and clubs where the shy guy will always hold his drink in front of him. It's a defensive move, and he'll do it either because he can't cross his arms with a drink in his hand or because he's trying not to cross his arms and he doesn't realize that he's basically doing the same thing. You should always hold your drink at your side.

Would you say that is universal or is it gender based?

Broseph !!fxnDb+Ve4 replied with this 14 years ago, 4 minutes later, 46 minutes after the original post[^] [v] #307,676

@previous (C)
It's universal, but it's a mistake that's much more common among guys. I still see shy girls doing it, but girls don't tense up in social situations like some guys do. If you go to a dance, party, bar, club, whatever, you will always see guys doing this.

What I meant was is it based on one gender interacting with the opposite gender or is it the same gender interacting but that was also a good answer.

Broseph !!fxnDb+Ve4 replied with this 14 years ago, 4 minutes later, 52 minutes after the original post[^] [v] #307,685

@previous (C)
Oh, in that case yes, it is universal. If a male is talking to another male, and one of the males closes his arms, the other male will get the feeling that they've lost interest in the conversation or something like that. So it's not always sexual. It happens more often in male to female interactions though, because one of them will get nervous, close his/her arms as a defense mechanism and inadvertently send the wrong signal to the other person.

What do you do instead? What are better mannerisms?

Just do anything with your hands other than crossing your arms or putting your hands in your pockets. I find that one thumb in your pocket is OK, while using the other hand for gestures, or leaning on a wall or fence or whatever. Don't put both thumbs in your pockets. And like I said, when you have a drink in your hand, keep it at your side. Playing with your hair is OK, especially if you're a girl. It shows the other person you're interested. Leaning on your hand is also OK (like with your elbow on a table or wall with your head resting in your palm) as long as you don't look bored, so that's fine as long as you smile and seem interested.
