Topic: The recoil from guns

Anonymous A started this discussion 14 years ago #18,547

Did clay shooting a few times with a 12 bore, I remember my shoulder was absolutely fucked afterwards, tons of bruising the recoil from a shotgun like that is too much. More recently I fired some assault rifles including an AK47 and found there was basically no recoil whatsoever in comparison, which really surprised me. What's the deal with that.

Shotguns don't reuse any of that energy, automatics and semi autos use explosive energy to power the mechanism that reloads the gun, so some of the energy released is captured.

Also a shotgun shell has more powder, i believe, than rifle ammo. Assault rifles don't really fire a very large round, it's basically a .22 with a large cartridge. Shotguns can fire a roll of quarters, lol.

An AK47 also uses a caliber that is too small to even legally hunt with in most states. 5.56 is good for recreational shooting, killing varmint where it's legal, and fully-automatic weapons. That's about it.

Aren't semi-automatic AK47s stupidly easy to find, though?

Yeah, because they're cheap and not very useful, for the reasons I just said.

The AK-47 fires a 7.62x39mm round. The AK-74 fires a 5.45x39mm round. The AR-15 fires the 5.56x45mm.

There are millions of Wasr-10 rifles, you get what you pay for.

My mistake. It's still much smaller than the 7.62x51, or .308, which is the smallest you can legally hunt with in many states.

Its an honest mistake, people always seem to think the AK either fires a 5.56x45mm or a 7.62x51mm. Arsenal Arms does make the SLR-106 which fires a 223, but it the gun seems to be hit and miss in terms of quality.
I would still love to own one though.
