I used to watch the really old 50's living desert videos as a kid, but that's about it. They were silly, but as a kid they were really fun.

they are and Disney does a great job with it's nature films. Not only is the footage stunning, and the film itself beautifully narrated, but you actually care about the animals that they focus on. btw, what is your favorite Disney movie, or favorite few?

Well, yes, monkeys have tails and apes don't, but there are several other differences as well. Monkeys have slanted nasal openings, while apes have round nasal opening. The bone structure of the shoulder is completely different between apes and monkeys, as the ape shoulder has evolved to swing from trees while monkeys often cannot swing like apes do. Monkeys are better adapted for climbing and leaping, giving them longer legs and sometimes webbed feet. Apes are all larger with much bigger brains, even in relation to their size (encephalization). The thumbs of monkeys and apes are also different, with monkeys sometimes lacking thumbs.

They would disagree because that is not the way nested hierarchies work in taxonomy. When people pretend that apes are separate and independent of other primates against all evolutionary sense, it drives cladists insane like grammar mistakes drive English majors insane. To them it sounds a lot like someone saying very insistently, "No, my cat isn't a mammal, it's a feline!"
The term monkey is, of course, not a terribly scientific distinction. If you would like to use it to refer to all simiiformes except those simiiformes of family hominidae, that is a common and acceptable usage of the word. Just be aware that the distinction is a linguistic rather than a scientific one.
