Chaotix was the least rubbish team in it, IMO since their levels had more variety with their objectives, rather than the other teams who were fairly dull.

And yeah, the rails were really annoying, which was odd considering that they were done well in Adventure 2.

Also, the story felt a bit weak but maybe that's just me.

Aiming is terrible and a mish-mash of angle problems, inability to control movement and the general feeling that it's obviously being marketed as the more "badass" version of Sonic. I hated the character because it's a real try-hard mess but if you don't give a shit then it helps stomaching the overall bad storyline.

Sonic trying to do guns is obviously not going to go smoothly, so I didn't really expect much quality from the guns anyway.

I haven't played it so I'm not fully informed here, but from what I've read the story is about as decent as SA2's. But yeah, Shadow is basically Sonic but badass, and I think they more or less pulled that off, though that's just my take on it.

Also, did you play Generations? I tried the demo but didn't really like it. It's quite different so it doesn't have the nostalgia appeal for me.

I did not as far as I am aware. I really didn't like the introduction of the character because it was re-hashing Knuckles' original role before they pussified him as another sidekick. Trying to make some emo/dark hedgehog that wears floating basketball shoes and fires guns while listening to metal is sooo mysterious/gangster so that's how they reel in a new audience by appealing to a bunch of urban youth stereotypes. At least that is how I saw it.

Your point about Shadow being urban/gangster and replacing Knuckles is actually quite fitting, since in the SAs Knuckles was sort of portrayed as gangster since all of his theme songs were rap. Really didn't fit his character, though.

Apparently it's worked, though. Shadow is the second most popular character, for what it's worth.

Well I mean this goes well beyond SA. I'm about to sperg out about this but the difference between S3 and SA is that there was no dialogue which added an element of mystery to the characters. Knuckles would appear at the end of levels so it gave the impression that he was always one step ahead of Sonic's game so he had much more a rival appeal. With the introduction of Shadow they kind of re-wrote that but they also added a metric fucktonne of other one-dimensional characters (Cream the Rabbit, Chao, etc.) so I mean whatever. He's the second most popular character because they revamped their fanbase (in my opinion for far worse) and it shows that most fanboys are also fucktards who enjoy shit games and shit characters. The rap music for Knuckles in SA does re-inforce my point (which I hadn't even thought of until you mentioned it), so someone had to appear as "the bad boy". Shadow's design is so Mary Sue that it hurts my brain trying to comprehend why people like the character so much, but then I remember the fanboy fucktardism so that's pretty much the only way I can explain it to myself.

That being said the whole thing already is a Dragonball Z rip-off so getting upset over all of this is tedious at best.

Oh and to sperg even further the fact it's a Dragonball Z rip-off means I could make more comparisons such as Knuckles being the equivalent of Piccolo, who was at first an enemy/rival of Goku until he became second banana. Vegeta takes his place in terms of Shadow but eventually (if this comparison continued) they'll eventually make his character a pussy as well.

Honestly, I don't really mind Shadow himself all that much. Personally I like that they gave him a whole background of his own, and that he was pretty different to any other chracter when he was introduced in terms of personality. I can appreciate your point of him heralding the downfall of the characters, though. Since Shadow was introduced in SA2 they've added too many extra characters, most of them rubbish or uninteresting.

Yeah, they did go a bit overboard with adding so many "friends", Cream srikes me as especially pointless. Either they're trying to make more chracters so they can sell more stuff to fans, or they just got a bit stupid. Probably both.
