how would go on about making a single word come up at first google result without paying google?
the word has to be a dictionary word, and it could be the domain name if that makes it easier

You can't do it universally anymore. Google places users in bubbles now and search result are specific to their use case.

But still, anytime you're looking to improve your rating, backlinks are what you need.

What word is it? If it is a "dictionary word", it is likely going to be next to impossible to achieve working in your basement or sending your bot to 4chan spamming links, especially if it is a sought after word like "money" or "cars" that big companies are paying monkeys to spam for them everywhere. Even getting it on the first page could be near impossible depending on what the word is, with a phrase of words you might have better luck. See what sites are coming up with your target word/phrase, and what page rank are those pages? (prchecker.info if you need some way to check)
