Topic: What is art, MC?

Broseph !!fxnDb+Ve4 started this discussion 14 years ago #18,297

Art is defined as:
1) The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture
2) Works produced by such skill and imagination.

Personally, I believe art is anything that is designed to aesthetically pleasing, and an artist is someone who is good at manipulating a medium to aesthetically please an audience. When I look at something, and there's nothing about it that I would like to change or add, then I think it's good art.

Anyone care to elaborate?

In a way, yes. Beauty is subjective. Art means different things to different people because people have different views on what is aethetically pleasing. Everything affects people differently.

I wouldn't say something's not art if I don't like it, though. As long as it has the desired effect on its target audience, it's good art.

As popular as Chris is, someone has probably masturbated to him just to see if it was possible.

Yes, anything that someone finds aesthetically pleasing is art. That can lead to some really sick shit, but that's why we have serial killers. The patterns and rituals that they follow in their murders is art to them.

Art is an expression of human thought that gets other people thinking about as well.

Anonymous B replied with this 14 years ago, 3 minutes later, 22 hours after the original post[^] [v] #304,871

And why is art so expensive?

Because if it wasn't, nobody would buy it.

That's a good point. When Leo Tolstoy wrote "What is Art?" his main point was that the purpose of art is to affect people; to provoke some sort of emotional response. Whether we're talking about provoking an emotion or figuring out what an audience finds aesthetically pleasing, it really boils down to psychology. We like art because we like things that stimulate our minds. When our brain tells us that something is beautiful or pleasing, it's because it's triggering something that's stimulating our brain; giving it exercise.
