Nowadays in order to make money mining you need to spend hundreds or thousands on powerful graphics cards. If you just want to buy shit with Bitcoins you can get them easily at Mtgox, Intersango or whatever.

That's debatable. Theoretically, Bitcoins are finite in quantity and will never exceed a certain number, giving them scarcity, and thus, value. The problem is gamers with overpowered computers treating them like free money vouchers.
