Topic: Is Android really taking over?

Anonymous A started this discussion 14 years ago #17,862

Image went missingThere seems to be a consensus among developers that Android is the future of all things open-source. Which is pretty funny to me considering it's actually only about 80-90% open source. But that's beside the point.

The current thinking seems to be if you want to develop Linux apps and you also want to be successful, you develop for Android, period. How true to you suppose that is?

80% percent is very good.

It's 100% true, can you name one Linux App that's even half as successful as say Angry Birds?

If you could stop being so stupid for two minutes you'd be doing us all a huge favour.
Who gives a fuck if it's a shit game (Which it isn't) no one is forcing you to buy it let alone play it.

It's retarded thinking because Android is only good for the mobile touch-interface market. Are you asking your question focusing only on the mobile market, or on the entire market including desktops and servers? If it's the latter, both you and the 'developers' are wrong.

I'm speaking with regard to the consumer market, not servers or enterprise apps.

I've reluctantly accepted mobile IS the future with respect to the consumer market. If you can't concede that point than I view your opinion as seriously uninformed. Mobile is growing at multiples of the desktop, and children's first exposure to an OS is almost universally to a mobile OS now. 5 year olds are using iPads. They're not using Windows or Ubuntu.

The only problem is that mobiles are restricted to, well, being mobile devices. They lack the power to do anything substantial past silly games, social networking or silly 'tools'. The document processing software for Android is less than adequate, and even if the software improves the interface to the devices has a long way to go before it's close to the usability of a mouse and keyboard.

Also, if you're referring to the consumer market then there isn't much arguing your point because pretty much all of our population will just stare at you blankly if you ask them what Linux is, so developing consumer Linux apps not for android means you're fucked, yep. Barely any consumers using Linux outside of Android.

> Instantly becomes a casual gamer.

Perfect logic.
Does it upset you that Angry Birds is currently one of the most popular games in the world?

What's wrong with casual games anyway? They're good for killing time if you're in a waiting room or something. They fill a niche.

A few very popular indie games have been ported to Linux.

I thought games were meant to be taken casually. They're games. I mean, if we start taking them seriously at what point do they stop being games at all and become serious business?

Yeah, that's true of all games mostly. Calling a game "casual" is just a way to catagorise it in comparison to other games.

Generally it applies to games that don't have much substance or depth (not necessarily a bad thing, a light-weight game can stand on one feature or gimmick) and are usually played on mobiles or Facebook.

On topic: I've used and loved Android on my phones for about three years. I definitely think it's currently the most viable Linux option for programmers 99% of the time.

I was gonna add that clause, then I thought about Linux' desktop popularity for the past 30+ years. Android desktop devices haven't really been made yet, but you bet that when they do, they'll see more desktop use in two years than Linux has since it came out.

I'm not really sure about that, personally. Apple has been trying to add mobile-like features like Launchpad to its desktop operating system, and from what I've seen, the feedback is extremely negative; I also can't see Android working well on a desktop or laptop, especially since most of its software support is geared toward mobile devices.
