You can be ripped and have a high BMI, or you can be light and still have a paunch. Because fat weighs less than muscle, a little fat makes a lot of difference.
You can find a lot of sites which show pictures of men/women with different body fat percentages and estimate where you fit in if you're uncertain about how to measure. Also, many scales can be bought at drugstores or Walmart which tend to give fairly accurate results.
