MS already killed the netbook by offering to preinstall XP.
Netbooks were selling great before that. Of course, you could only surf the web and check email with the stripped down linux distros they used, but they did this competently despite the low end hardware.
But once XP came to the scene. Consumers overwhelmingly choose XP netbooks, naively thinking it would give them the capability to run any Windows software. This proved impossible. Everyone learned to think "netbooks suck," even though it was all the fault of bloated and ancient code.

I hear ya. I've got a Aspire 1410 that does alright with Win 7, but after turning it into a dual-boot with Ubuntu I only ever bring up the Windows side when it's necessary to run a specific app. Ubuntu is noticeably faster even though it's sort of a fatass as far as GNU/Linux distros go.

Yes, it is inevitable. Tablets will likely replace laptops as well, as the technology gets smaller and more powerful tablets will do everything a laptop does now. Someday you'll set your tablet on it's stand and use the infrared keyboard to use it just like you'd use a laptop today. Though some version of laptops will be likely used in some capacity for a long damn time (gaming laptops come to mind).

Accessibility and usability are issues, though. Keyboards and mice are generally a lot more precise and practical than touchscreens.
Also, tablet hardware is usually mobile stuff, like ARM system-on-a-chip setups, and run different operating systems, like iOS, webOS and Android.

Meh, they won't be able to go much smaller in about 10 years. Maybe less. Apparently if you make a components too small quantum effects bork them. Unless silicone is replaced with better materials then smaller and faster will no longer be the paradigm.

Fujitsu produces a smartphone that uses x86, and according to a review I read, it got an hour of batter life in Windows mode. Most tablet operating systems like Android are touch-oriented anyway, they won't be as productive to use with external peripherals as Windows, OS X, Linux/BSD desktop environments, etc.

Sure. But will we plateau before new nano-materials are ready for mass production? Graphene is a potential candidate, but they still use scotch tape to "manufacture" it in the lab. Unless they can scale up to the same level of production as silicone then the computer market will effectively stall out.
Potentially cloud computing could work as a stop gap by offering faster than desktop speeds (when we reach the limit) but as far as "new computers" go they'll just be last years model in a fancy new box.

Production of graphine isn't really the issue, it wouldn't be hard to produce it in massive quantities. At this point they could have a 100 tons of graphene, but there is no practical application for it. There are quite a few 'potential' technologies for far more powerful computers, but that's all they are is 'potential', nothing has come to fruition yet. It's clear though that science is on the brink (meaning likely within 10 years) of the next step in technological evolution. Interesting times we live in.
