Myself and MM just started playing Minecraft, and I already have a lot of questions, so rather than have over 9,000 different threads I'll keep them here.
Are texture packs easy to install/uninstall? Do you have any texture pack recommendations? Same questions for Minecraft mods.

yea texture packs are super easy, you can download them in zip files. then when you're on the minecraft main menu there is a texture packs button, click it. then there will be an open folder button. open the folder and drag the texture pack zip into the folder. from there select the newly placed texture pack and boom, suddenly pretty colors.

I would store them away for now. Can be useful to have a diamond pick on hand, but you'll only need it to mine obsidian. Generally iron is better to make your tools and weapons because it's a lot cheaper.

a sword and a pick, and save the other two.
when a diamond tool gets in the red, store it and when you get many damaged tools of the same type combine them
i also advise you to put a shortcut to your .minecraft folder somewhere

you just put two on the crafting table and you should get a tool with combined hitpoints.
not sure what version the server is playing on though.

I found cavern systems so huge I'm forced to set up a forward base camp just to explore them all and stay supplied. This game is ridiculously addictive.
