Money buys whores, food, and comfort. Those things are all pleasures, but pleasure is not the same thing as happiness. True happiness transcends physical pleasure.

Well, I contend unhappy people make less money precisely because they are unhappy. Think about it rationally for a second. If you have two employees, one who loves his job and is grateful to have it and one who hates his job and wants nothing more than to find something better, who are you going to give a raise to first?

From $0 to $60,000, the gains in purchasing power, upward mobility, and social stability trend upward with the increased annual income. Beyond $60,000, however, each additional dollar provides a diminishing amount of happiness.

It is said that money cannot buy happiness, but that saying really should be considered shorthand for “excessive wealth cannot buy happiness.” For people under the median income of their peers, money certainly does provide some happiness.

It does bring some happiness, but at a diminishing rate. You likely become more caught up in the cycle of wasteful spending and stress and lose sight of the basic empowerment that comes through money.

From a utilitarian viewpoint, money given to the ultra-rich will deprive poor people of happiness and cause a net decrease in global happiness.

All those things you refer to are pleasures, not happiness. Pleasures inspire happiness, but they are not happiness in and of themselves. For Christ sakes DM, you claim to be an educated man. Surely you see the distinction.

It's simple. Pleasures become boring or painful once you've had enough. Happiness never becomes boring.

DM, that's entertainment, not happiness. It's a distraction from the usual drudgery of pushing shit uphill, but you don't need any of those things to feel happy. I'd wager a cold beer that any true happiness you've ever felt was unrelated to material wealth. Think back to your childhood. Didn't you feel happy playing with your friends, laughing with your buddies or sharing a good yarn? You didn't need money for any of that, and yet you were probably happier then than you've ever been during your adult life.

The happiest times I can remember were playing with my male friends in the empty lot, playing baseball, tag, football, whatever. However, I also had a warm house and warm food to go home to. I can promise that, had I been homeless and hungry, I would not remember those times as happy times.

DM, even if you and your friends had been living in a forest scrounging for nuts and berries, you still would have found happiness in their company. That's the nature of the human beast; it's hardwired into our genes.
