The prickly pear leaves are shriveling, which should mean the plant is attempting to convert its water store into new roots. Hurrah!

The largest of the four leaves is budding. If the bud turns into a flower, I’ll pinch it off so the plant spends its energy on vegetative growth.

More than 30 rhubarb seeds are growing. I'll transplant them in about two weeks and thin for the more flavorful and productive plants. As many as possible will go to friends, and the rest will continue as a test crop.

These are the best looking tomatoes I have right now. They're descendants of the sweet 100 variety.

One other tomato plant is fruiting, and the third one is flowering. A nearby tree was pruned back today to provide more sun to the beds.

I'm separating more sage seed, now. The four round seeds left of center show a fully pollinated and mature cluster. There were flowers attached to these pods.

Here's a shelf unit I just purchased and set up. I'll almost certainly use it for the seed starting setup I'm creating. This will be one of my winter projects.

Today I watered and fertilized a lot of the container garden. I had held off on watering some of the plants to ensure the roots would dry out. I'm trying to avoid root rot.

There were some moth larvae wrapped up amongst silk inside leaves. I killed them to ensure the pests do not reproduce.

Each butter lettuce and Ark of Taste lettuce seedling has set a true leaf. They're looking better, now that they get more sun. I've been watering them less frequently and gave them a generous soak, today.

I've continued to make incremental progress on thinning the squash. There has been minor bug damage on a leaf or two and I found an aphid. I didn't see any eggs or larvae.

More than 60 tomatoes have set, so far, and blossoms continue to bloom. There's insect damage on each of the three plants, but I have not seen larvae or eggs.

Several spiders have set up in the tomatoes, which is a very pleasing sight.

The carrots continue to make pleasing progress. I am skeptical that they will hit maturity at 60 days, but this is around day 45. The slow growth on some of them will be good for extending the season.

The back row of lettuce is performing the worst. That's the most shaded part of the garden. The front two rows are the Ark of Taste variety, which appears quite productive.

There is some insect damage on these plants, but it doesn't seem covering them will help more than it hurts.

This is my first female acorn squash flower of the year. The males do not have the round ovary at the base and just directly connect to the stem.

I pollinated it with a male flower from another acorn squash plant and pinched it shut.

This is the larval caterpillar stage of a moth that eats leafy greens. They can devastate a good plant.

With organic gardening, the options for killing them are…

• cover the plants
• spray the bugs with a mild soapy solution (it strips them of oils and dehydrates them)
• introduce or attract predators like wasps, spiders, and birds
• or manually kill them
