Topic: Should I be an organ donor?

Homestar !RUNNERV7vk started this discussion 14 years ago #16,747

I recently had a friend get very angry with me because I didn't specify organ donor on my driver license.

I don't have any logical reason for not being a donor, other than the idea of my body parts in somebody else makes me feel uncomfortable (uncertainty about what happens after death, etc).

So... should my friend get over it and respect my wishes, or... (in her words) "there are no valid reasons not to be a donor" ?

If your a donor and you're on the edge of dieing, you'll give you the final push and salvage your organs.
At least that are the rumors around here, 3rd world etc lol...

There really are no valid reasons not to be a donor.

Why do you need your organs after you die anyway?

Some people object on religious grounds, because they think removing parts of their body will take their 'soul' or some crap. I've had people tell me that before.

And I can't donate because I have diabeetus, and I don't think diabetics can donate organs.

For what it's worth, your friend sounds like an easily offended moron.

That's kind of how I feel. It seems a bit... unnatural to me. I wouldn't give blood if I were allowed to, either.

I think that's really fucking selfish.

I've always thought you're a nice guy; this surprises me.

I'm selfish/not nice because I feel spiritually conflicted about sharing my body parts with others?

Yes.

I didn't say that being selfish was a bad thing (although it is in my opinion), but at least admit it's selfish.

You're right actually.
To be honest, I probably wouldn't hesitate if it was somebody I cared about.

Now you're making me think.

would you accept the blood of someone else?

Good question. I guess I would. I probably wouldn't take an organ though.

I'm not a organ donor mainly because I want to be cryogenically frozen.
I'm also not a blood donor and I'm O-. Does this upset you?

I'm not an organ donor because I smoke and drink.
my organs will not be worth saving.
I'll see to that

It's like, why give blood if you're on medication? They just have to throw it out. it's pointless.

No! They harvest them while you are still alive! Seriously! Dead organs are no good, so if you are terminal or in a coma, they cut you open and take them right before they let you die.

Isn't that right? I heard that if they see it on your card that you are a donor they say "Hold on with the first aid, this guy's a donor!" They're not there to help, they're looking for parts, man! "Hey Bill, doesn't your brother-in-law need a new kidney?"
